<description>Cone transducin is a member of the family of heterotrimeric G proteins that couples ligand-activated, heptahelical transmembrane receptors (G-protein-coupled receptors; GPCRs) to downstream effector proteins. Visual pigments expressed by the photoreceptor cells are the GPCRs that are activated by photon absorption. Light initiates a conformational change in the GPCR, which then activates cone transducin by causing the exchange of bound GDP for GTP in the cone transducin component Tcalpha. Tcalpha-GTP then binds the inhibitory gamma-subunit of the effector enzyme phosphodiesterase and stimulates its activity. This G-protein-mediated intracellular signaling cascade in photoreceptor cells is called phototransduction.</description>
